They came from all walks of life.  Pensacola has a large surfing community and its adherents are as diverse and complicated as found anywhere.  There are no leaders but some set higher standards than others.  The Bible speaks of building a city on a hill so as to be "the light of the world."  Nobody built a better city on a hill than Yancy Spencer.  I didn't know him personally but I heard of him from a man I respect most in our community.  I was privileged to be there as the local surfing community made sure everyone knew how they felt about their friend.

Friends paddled out to say good-bye to a friend and to celebrate his life.  More people lined the boardwalk and the beach.  When it was over it seemed as though no one wanted it to end.  Maybe that was the message of this day and that man—it's never really over...
